The New DDR4 PC Build

Internal

My new PC has been up and running for a bit. Time to finally hit it with a bottle of champagne and call it stable. One of donttellmetheending’s first blog posts was the creation of my last Desktop, “Building a new PC”:

Building a New PC

It seems fitting to follow-up with a similar update for this new machine.  I’ve been waiting for DDR4 ram to make the jump into a new PC, and while it does not offer the performance boost over DDR3 that I had hoped for, it’s not a bad box. Here are “Martin’s” specs:

New PC post has been delayed due to…

Status

New PC post has been delayed due to faulty parts, and I didn’t really want to type it up until things have been RMA’d and I can provide a full list and analysis.

In the meantime, I did manage to play and beat Shadow of Mordor. So far, it’s my front runner for game of the year. The moment to moment gameplay is just great. It’s an open world game where the missions are fun, the in between moments when you aren’t in mission are fun, and even the traversal is pretty fun. This is kind of a rarity in the open-world games market. You can wait for a Black Friday deal, but if you like Assassin’s Creed or the Batman Arkham series, I can’t imagine you’d be disappointed.

It takes the best parts of both, and mixes it with a few new systems while also cutting away the cruft. IE, you can Sprint with a button, you can Stealth with another button, and if you Sprint+Stealth you just run at near full sprint speed while stealthy. Someone sees you and their Alert bar fills all the way? You still have a couple extra seconds to take them out with a stealth kill. They won’t just immediately grab your sword and fling you away; the alarm bar isn’t a binary switch. Just, a lot of design decisions where “man, that’s annoying, let’s make it fun instead” were applied.

“Sleep when the baby sleeps.”

My baby sleeps when I take him for a walk or drive in a car. “More coffee” it is!

Alright after a bit of research I think…

Alright, after a bit of research, I think I’m going to stick with WordPress. I’ve got a back catalog of articles I’ve written for other websites that I’ll slowly rotate up here, along with an update on Red Dead Redemption from 2010 (hah!) and my latest project: building a new PC. The new PC post was one of the first, a joint post with mattlindh, so it feels a bit like coming full circle.

watching me watching you

In case you’ve followed/still following this blog: it’s woefully out of date. I’ve actually been writing elsewhere and unable to double-post the content back here. I’m looking into the WordPress vs. Tumblr thing and going to try to bring this back up to date. In the meantime, here’s a sweet trailer showing off some details on the upcoming Watch_dogs.

I finally beat: Halo 3 ODST

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0Q8Ca9jhQs

Halo 3 ODST is the latest Halo game from Bungie.  Originally planned as DLC (that’s downloadable content for you greens), there’s enough spit and polish gone into this fine example of a game to push it into prime time status.  A full retail release.

It don’t hurt that it also includes a Halo 3 multiplayer disc. The full Halo 3 multiplayer suite as if you were playing the original and it’s fully backwards compatible. Anyone out there tho didn’t jump in on the original Halo 3’s “map packs” can get them n’ more here.  That makes this disc shiny and your Halo 3 disc all manner of useless.

For the fans who did pony up the dough, you’re fan enough to appreciate the main adventure. For fans who don’t care about playing Halo multiplayer, this title ain’t for you. It may be the best Halo single-player campaign, but make no mistake: this is still Halo.

IMDB, Ghost Buster III, and Chuck Norris

I <3 IMDB

After Bill Murray’s awesome appearance in Zombie Land, I decided to take a gander at his IMDB page. I noticed the scripting and rumor of his next big movie, Ghost Busters III (2012).

Why does Chuck Norris sleep with a nightlight? Not because Chuck Norris is afraid of the dark… but because the dark is afraid of Chuck Norris.

Chuck Norris and Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) will be casted together in Cowboys and Aliens (2011).
