Rez Plz!

I just bought Rez.  You should, too.

On Xbox Live and PSN, there are a few must own games. Undertow was free, and I hope you all already got that one. Alien Hominid packs a ton of value into its $10’s of classic Contra-like action. Everyday Shooter is probably the best top-down shooter, and PixelJunk Monsters has some of the most simple, fun co-op I’ve played in awhile.
Rez, however, is a classic. If you haven’t already played it, then you at least know of it. You know it’s hard to find. You know its a cult-classic. You know about the Trance Vibrator . So, is Rez worth $10 bucks? Considering that’s the price of admission to “must-see” movies: Yes. Sure, half the time the movie just isn’t your cup of tea or is over-hyped. The other half of the time, though, the movie is quite entertaining. And sometimes, it’s really, really great.

Either way, you have to see it to be able to talk about it with your buddies. And, can anyone really describe Rez well in words? I may give it a shot later (starfox-rhythm-panzerDragoon-flOw-amplitude shooting game?), but you do need to try playing it the Miz way.

Rant: Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2

Toe Jam and Earl

Rant: Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 NEEDS to have co-op combination of Live and Local. If I have 2 friends over, and a 3rd at his home, I want to play with all of them, dammit.

It’s not like the experience is any different on Live than Local play already. The screen locks you all together no matter which platform (local or live) that you play on. You simply can’t have 2 people on the same console. If Halo can do it, an xbox port of the xmen legends engine sure should be able to. Or perhaps that’s the problem…

Either way, from a gamer’s standpoint: just do it already. You know it makes sense.

My initial impressions of: Monster Madness

My initial impressions of: Monster Madness

I found Monster Madness for $20. Not too bad. Came in handy earlier this evening when some friends were over who wanted to play some 3 player co-op on the same box that wasn’t Marvel Ultimate Alliance.

Not too many choices after that. Continue reading

My initial impressions of: No More Heroes

No More Heroes Gameplay Screen

My initial impressions of: No More Heroes

I like No More Heroes. The graphics are AWFUL, the combat is repetitive, and the voice actings is (hopefully intentionally) bad.

The game is just fun, though. They know their target audience: old school gamers into anime. If the idea of your game progress being kept in an old Arcade Cabinet’s Top Ten list as you ride around town in an X-Wing/Akira motorcycle collecting anime t-shirts from dumpsters while you kill people with a light saber that gains batteries by shaking the wiimote like you are shaking your ‘wii,’ then this game is definitely worth a look.

While the initial tutorial gives a horrible impression of what is to come, the first boss fight does a pretty good job of letting you know there is more to this game. I’ll need to go back and play it again with subtitles; I couldn’t hear all of the dialog during the first boss fight. What I did hear, though, was quite interesting and helped make the point there is more to this game than initial appearances.

I just hope I can make it through the free-roam section. I’ve heard it’s bad. And I normally hate these free-roam games unless there is a gimmick to the transportation (Crackdown’s Mega Jump, Spiderman’s websling, Assassin Creed’s free-running). From what I’ve played so far it does not seem particular interesting. I just hope they don’t force me to spend too much time in it.

I finally beat: Bioshock

I finally beat: Bioshock

Well, I may have finished it after all my friends, but I have finally beat Bioshock. It is definitely game of the year material. It certainly has flaws, but for every flaw it does two things right. Continue reading

Organizing pLayday

I want to organize a day of the week where we all attempt to get online Xb Live and play a game. Instead of leaving it to chance, we make an effort to log on a particular day and play together in a game we all have.

I can even post ideas for the game here ahead of time (map or gametype preferences can be expressed in comments).

I have been gathering potential days from everyone, and so far the best day looks like Tuesday.

I finally beat: Halo 3

Achievement

I finally beat: Halo 3

This is a bit delayed, as I actually beat Halo 3 within two or three days of its launch.

Halo 3 is just the natural progression of Halo-ness. Halo may have revolutionized FPS with it’s two weapon system (How can I carry these 18 weapons at once? Where does that chainsaw GO when I pull out my Sniper Rifle, Pistol, Shotgun, and Assault Rifle) and Regenerating Health (I’m bleeding deep in enemy territory. Good thing there are all these bullet healing health packs lying around EVERYWHERE), and a fun Co-Op Campaign (Mobile Respawn Point) but the 3rd game should bring something new to the table. After all, that’s what Halo did to make itself so popular. Let’s split this into two parts: Campaign and Matchmaking. Continue reading

Bioshock Progress Report #2

Bioshock Progress Report #2

Okay. I now have motivation. There was a great story revelation partway through. Bioshock has a PLOT and characters beyond what they initially portray. Sure, some aspects of it are predictable, but others most certainly are not. And the conversation with the twist revealed is excellently acted. The voice actor/s do an outstanding job, and the entire scene is just directed well.

Anyway, the game is still easy, and perhaps even getting easier; it is hard to tell when everything dies with 2 hits of a wrench. Still, I am motivated to make it through now. They have gotten me interested in Rapture beyond looking at pretty architecture. I just hope the ending can hold up after such a cinematic chapter.

There is no ending to: SceneIt?

BookIt

There is no ending to: SceneIt?

There is no plot to spoil for SceneIt, only the questions. The movie selection is varied, with quite a few older Oscar-winning movies. “It won 13 Oscars?!? How have I not heard of it!” There is a nice selection of easy achievements, and a few trickier ones.

Overall, it is a great party game. The buzzer controllers are fun to use and fairly easy to understand. They use a proprietary IR USB hub. This initially meets with a poor reaction, but they did take this as an opportunity to do something good for the consumer. You can use both a regular controller and SceneIt controller at the same time, letting up to 8 people play in teams of 2…. Continue reading

Bioshock Progress Report #1

I got past the Vegas sequence. That lasted a bit longer than I would have liked, but at least I was collecting something more interesting than chemicals. My character’s wrench is a bit too powerful. With stacking plasmids, my wrench does far more damage than my fully upgraded shotgun at close range. I don’t even have to use any shock+smack combo; the smack kills them in 1-3 hits. The game’s plot is picking up again, but I know I can’t be that close to the end yet.
