Get hyped for: Prince of Persia

There’s a great gameplay (in-engine) trailer available online and on Live.  I recommend checking it out.

Also, they just released this 5 minutes of gameplay footage that looks great.  The Banter could use a little work, and I was more off put by the Prince’s Voice acting until I learned it’s the same actor as Nathan Drake (Uncharted for PS3).  And he did an excellent job there.

Microsoft releases Photosynth

This is kind of neat.  It will let you upload pictures and then stitch them together as a 3d viewable object.  The trick is it apparently does this really fast.  Since I only have an iPhone camera, this may be a bit trickier for me to test, but certainly looks interesting.

Thanks, cnet for the article of their impressions.

I finally read: Watchmen

I finally read: Watchmen

I bit behind on my posts.  Since I finished Watchmen a month or so back, I’ve loaned it out and back to about six different people.

This is one of Time’s Top 100 Novels for a reason.  Written back in 1986, this is the comic ‘blamed’ for dark comic stories.  This had the raving Conspiracy Theorist before they were popular.  A world without heroes when Batman still wore Blue and Gray.  An alternate Cold War history changed by the concept of heroes now long retired.  Watchmen is a story about people and their faults as much as the overall plot.

I finally beat: Braid

I finally beat: Braid

Well, finally may not be the right word.  I played through this one pretty quick.  My initial impressions held up throughout, and exceeded in terms of story.  Very similar to Portal in both story presentation and gameplay.  Platforming that requires perfect timing and precision, but a gameplay mechanic that makes what seems impossible easy.  It is less about skill, and more about knowing what you want to do. So, let’s delve into a few specifics of things Braid did right and wrong, as a compliment Sandwich:

I finally beat: Metal Gear Solid 4 – Guns of the Patriots

I finally beat: Metal Gear Solid 4 – Guns of the Patriots

“Old Soldiers don’t die, they develop nanomachine virii, rapid aging disease, get shot, eletricuted, blown up, strangled, set on fire, and then…”

And then they do it again.  Well, that’s what I’ll be doing once Metal Gear Solid 4 gets trophy support.  Guns and equipment carry from New Game to New Game+.  It’ll be quite fun unlocking the last few guns I didn’t find or buy the first time around, and using the late game weaponry in the early levels.  There are more guns in MGS4, with more options, with greater firepower, than Army of Two.  Or most any other game.  And this is a game where the entire play-through, minus boss fights, can be beaten without killing a single person.

I beat this game awhile ago.  It was the beginning of the long silence of gaming related posts on this blog.  This was due to the fact that I beat the whole game in about a week when I got it.  Each time I would sit down, I’d have to decide between writing about MGS4, or just playing it some more.  Writing about it would have been a 10-15 minute break.  A break I never took.

pLayday: 8/19 – Soul Calibur IV

pLayday: 8/19 – Soul Calibur IV

“A tale of souls eternally told.”  This translates into hitting each other with swords, spears, hammers, axes, and lightsabers.

Since a few of us just moved and the 360’s aren’t all setup yet or hooked up to internet, I figure I should just host a hotseat event.  The regulars and guests are welcome to come over and beat the stuffing out of each other with custom characters, jedi, or the traditional roster.

I got an iPhone.

I got an iPhone. Expect updates.

My biggest gripe would be a lack of good To Do list and Notes. Both of which have decent DLC solutions, but not as well integrated as the built in contact and calendar support.

Also, while Contacts has built in Address to Map support, Calendar appointments do not.

The is no push protocal for 3rd party apps, yet. So you must log into aim or facebook to see if you have messages waiting.

But….

The touch screen is great. Useful and beautiful.

New apps coming out every week.

It is 3 devices in one, and the whole device is quite small. Phone, PDA, and iPod all in a flat device that easily fits in your pocket.

This post was sent from the iPhone.

TF2 Free Weekend – Aug 22-24

TF2 Free Weekend – Aug 22-24

Everyone preload this.  And post when you think you’d like to do a 2-4+ hr session.  This is your chance to see how well (usually surprisingly well) TF2 runs on your aging (or awesome-o) PC.

There is no TF2 demo, and loading it up the weekend of can be a painfully slow download.

Several of us already own it.  My steam id for the friends list is Phokis.  Shoot me a request once you are up and running with Steam.

don't tell me the ending to: Braid

don’t tell me the ending to: Braid

Braid is simply a marvelous game.  One could think ‘Mario Bros with Time Control’ would help give an idea, a glimpse of concept, as to how it plays.

But it doesn’t.

Time control was revolutionary with Prince of Persia.  It allowed the game to be brutally difficult, slaughtering your character left and right, but a press of a button and it was as if it had never happened.  You had the mix of classic challenging gameplay with the new school though of “I don’t want to play level 1-1, again.”

This isn’t what Braid is.
